The mayors of Athens, Madrid, Mexico City and Paris say they are committed to banning the use of diesel-powered vehicles in their cities by 2025.

The confirmations came at this week’s C40 Cities climate change meeting in Mexico City. The 11-year-old group boasts more than 80 city members that represent 600 million people. Its goal is to help cities adopt policies to reduce carbon emissions that affect climate change.

The organization notes that cities account for 2% of the world’s landmass but consume more than two-thirds of its energy and generate more than 70% of its carbon dioxide emissions. The group’s intent is to reduce pollution regardless of national policies on the subject.

On Thursday the mayors of four U.S. city members—Austin, Phoenix, Portland, Seattle and Washington, D.C.—urged president-elect Donald Trump to recognize the threat of climate change and help them address it. Trump has described global warming as a hoax. But he also has indicated willingness to consider the issue.
