Honda Motor Co. says it will launch a hybrid and all-electric version of its upcoming Clarity sedan next year.

The all-new fuel-cell-powered Clarity is due to launch later this year in California. It will be followed early next year by an all-electric model—also limited to California initially—and a plug-in hybrid later in 2017.

Honda says the Clarity’s platform was designed to support a variety of powertrains. This is possible in part to a more compact fuel cell design, which Honda says is about the size of a V-6 engine.

Styling between the three models will vary slightly.

Honda previously has said that it expects two-thirds of its global car sales to include some sort of electrified models by 2030. Last year, such models accounted for only about 1% of Honda’s sales in the U.S.
