Chances are, when you think “autonomous vehicles,” you think along the lines of this:

Google car

the Google car.

However, you should also think along the lines of this:

autonomous farm

--not the pig, of course, but the harvester.

Deutsche Telekom is working with Leica Geosystems and Sensor-Technik Wiedemann, and they’ve developed a retrofit solution for farm equipment that feeds corrected GPS data into the steering systems.

Apparently, it was the case that farmers who were going autonomous in their fields had to set up their own RTK, or Real Time Kinematic, base stations, which was expensive.

But in this new setup, the information goes to the Telekom Cloud via a mobile communications network.

The automated farm machinery has accurate data to control its drive path. And it even is able to make adjustments to optimize its fuel economy.
