Developers are working to enable cars to drive themselves and to connect with new services for their occupants. The two features are independent. But the real value in tomorrow’s cars will be integrating both capabilities, says Mike O’Brien, vice president of corporate and product planning for Hyundai Motor America.
With a fully autonomous car, for example, you could command your vehicle to drive itself to the dealership for overnight maintenance and return the next morning before you head to your job, O’Brien says. Add connectivity, and the need for repairs could be determined remotely and a service appointment booked automatically with no effort on your part.
