Google Inc.’s Waymo autonomous car unit is partnering with Trov Inc., a 5-year-old insurance company, to provide personal property coverage for people riding in Waymo’s self-driving vehicles.
California-based Trov offers smartphone-based insurance services for portable belongings such as smartphones, laptops, sports equipment, cameras and headphones. Customers can use their mobile phones to turn coverage on and off for specific items. The Trov smartphone app also enables them to file damage or loss claims via text.
Waymo plans in early 2018 to offer customers in Phoenix rides in completely autonomous vehicles with no driver on board. The company says the commercial shared-mobility service it intends to introduce will mesh well with Trov’s spontaneous service model.
During the pilot phase, Waymo plans to pay the insurance premium to cover the belonging of its riders.
