Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo autonomous car unit has dropped three of four patent infringement claims in a broader trade secrets lawsuit against rival Uber Technologies Inc.
The claim stems from Waymo’s assertion that secrets about its laser-based sensor (lidar) technology for autonomous cars were stolen by ex-employee Anthony Levandowski and turned over to Uber when he was hired by the ride-hailing company.
Waymo says it has withdrawn three patent claims because they relate to a form of lidar that Uber no longer uses. The judge hearing the case asked Waymo last month to trim its more than 100 trade secret claims to fewer than 10. He also suggested the company consider dropping all its patent infringement claims against Uber.
