Volkswagen AG CEO Matthias Mueller has joined other carmakers in suggesting Europe redesign its emission test procedures to narrow the gap between lab results and over-the-road measurements.
The gaps, which can amount to several times the allowable limit, are “no longer tolerable,” Mueller declares. He says the industry needs to “take a new path."
Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn and Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche have made similar suggestions over the past several weeks.
The widely recognized discrepancies in emission levels have been criticized by environmentalists for years. But the issue has come under sharper scrutiny since September, when VW admitted it rigged 11 million diesel-powered vehicles to cheat emission tests.
