Volkswagen AG is considering building a racing or high-performance version of its 314-mpg XL1 diesel-electric hybrid.
Chairman Ferdinand Piech revealed the possibility during a speech in Vienna last week.
Piech says the so-called VW XL1 Sport would use a 1.2-liter, 187-hp engine from a Ducati superbike in place of the 0.8-liter, 74-hp turbodiesel-electric powertrain (VW acquired Ducati last year). He estimates the extra power would enable the 1,750-lb XL1 Sport to sprint to 62 mph in 4 seconds, compared to 11.9 seconds for the XL1.
The standard XL1 began production this year in Osnabruck, Germany, with 250 of the $143,000 cars scheduled for delivery by spring 2014. Piech did not say when the Sport model might be built.
