VW’s First EV for the U.S. to Be Called “ID4”

Volkswagen AG plans to introduce at least three electric car models in the U.S., starting with a small crossover that will be called the ID4, a source tells Automotive News.
VW is displaying a disguised version of the vehicle this week at the Frankfurt auto show. AN says the car’s profile suggests a more traditional roofline than the coupelike ID Crozz concept (pictured) upon which it is based.
VW Group plans a wide array of all-electric models under the ID (short for “intelligent design”) sub-brand and featuring the company’s MEB global modular electric chassis.
The two-row ID4 will be imported from Europe for two years before production shifts to an $800 million assembly line being added to VW’s factory in Chattanooga, Tenn. The model will share several technical innovations expected in the smaller ID3 crossover also unveiled in Frankfurt this week, including a head-up navigational display that indicates upcoming turns.
The ID3 will begin production late this year and go on sale in Europe in early 2020 at a starting price around €30,000 ($33,100). The Golf-sized ID3 won’t be offered in the American market.
