Volkswagen AG has begun using quantum computers to develop and test electric vehicle batteries.

The carmaker says its initial applications with the ultra-high-powered computers has been to simulate lithium-hydrogen molecules and carbon chains. VW will detail the results of its research at next week’s CEBIT technology show in Hanover, Germany.

The company aims to eventually use quantum computers to simulate the chemical structure of an entire battery. This will allow engineers to optimize various attributes, such as power density, cell assembly and weight reduction, to improve battery performance and speed the development process.

VW software engineers and data scientists in California and Germany are using quantum computers to develop advanced algorithms for the project, which the carmaker says is in the early development stages. Google and British Columbia-based software specialist D-Wave also are working with the carmaker on other quantum computer applications, including traffic flow management.
