Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority has ordered Volkswagen AG to recall 2.4 million diesel-powered vehicles equipped to cheat emission tests. The ruling rejects VW’s suggestion that the repairs be done on a voluntary basis.
VW CEO Matthias Mueller says the company also will recall 6.1 million similarly configured diesels elsewhere in the EU28 countries. Affected cars were sold between 2009 and last August.
The 11 million targeted diesels include 482,000 in the U.S. that also face a recall. VW said last week it will install new equipment in many of the affected cars and may replace entire vehicles in some cases.
Analysts note that a mandated recall is rare in Europe, suggesting German regulators are impatient with VW’s pace in explaining how it will fix the cars. The company plans to begin recalls in January but won’t divulge the technical details until mid-November.
