Volkswagen AG has halted operations at its auto assembly plant in Taubate, Brazil, for three weeks, according to Reuters, which cites union sources. VW has not commented.
The factory, which employs 4,200 workers, makes the Up! city car along with the Gol small hatchback and four-door Voyage variant.
Car sales and production in Brazil declined 7% and 15%, respectively, in 2014, according to industry group ANFAVEA. Reuters notes that sales and output are down more than 20% this year. Demand has been hurt by high inflation in Brazil and a weak economy in Argentina, the country's largest export market.
