Volkswagen AG tells the British Parliament’s transport committee it has repaired 470,000 of 1.2 million of its diesel-powered vehicles in the U.K. that had been illegally rigged to evade EU emission standards.
VW says it is repairing the remaining cars at a rate of 20,000 per week. At that pace, the engine updates will be completed at the end of 2017.
Reuters reports that some British lawmakers are angry that VW hasn’t been sanctioned in the U.K. and are pushing for compensation payments to owners, much as the carmaker has agreed to do in the U.S.
The transport ministry says it may launch its own investigation into VW’s emissions cheating pending the release of technical data by its counterpart agency in Germany. England is among several EU countries that have been threatened by the European Commission with legal action for their lack of response to the scandal.
The ministry also told British lawmakers that it will meet with lawyers who have begun legal action to force VW to pay compensation to affected customers. The ministry says it aims to determine what support the government might be able to lend to the lawsuits, according to Reuters.
