AG CEO Matthias Mueller predicts Volkswagen AG will need some 3 million batteries per year to power its electrified vehicles a decade from now—and will probably build its own factory in Germany to supply them.

Mueller tells Sunday’s Frankfurter Allgemeine that a VW-owned battery factory “makes sense” because the company expects more than 25% of its passenger vehicle sales will be electrified by 2025. VW has said it will have introduced 30 all-electric or plug-in hybrid models by then.

In the past two months the company announced plans to debut an electric iteration of its Crafter large commercial van next year and build a production version of its sleek I.D. concept electric sedan in 2020. VW also will begin assembling an all-electric version of the Golf five-door hatch next April.

On Friday VW said it will eliminate 30,000 jobs worldwide through attrition by 2025. But the company adds that it expects to create 9,000 new jobs in battery production and mobility-related services such as ride-sharing and connectivity products.
