VW Powers Up with New W-12 Engine

Volkswagen AG's next-generation 6.0-liter 12-cylinder engine will use twin turbochargers and direct injection technology to enhance engine output and fuel economy.
This will be the first time VW has teamed the two technologies in its unique W-12 configuration, which pairs two V-6 engines in a compact W shape. The company currently offers the technologies separately in two different W-12 engines. A turbocharged 6.0-liter mill is used in VW Group's Bentley models; the Audi A8 uses a direct-injection, naturally aspirated 6.3-liter unit.
The new engine will meet Euro 6 emissions regulations, emitting less than 250 g/km of carbon dioxide. A standard stop-start system and cylinder deactivation will enhance fuel economy.
In sedans such as the A8, the new W-12 is expected to get 22 mpg combined city/highway on the optimistic European driving cycle. That's about 30% more efficient than the current 6.3-liter W-12, which debuted in the VW Phaeton in 2002.
The first applications for the new W-12 engine will generate as much as 600 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. A more powerful configuration will be added later. At least one of the upcoming vehicles to receive the powerplant will have a top speed of 186 mph and reach 62 mph in less than four seconds, according to media reports.
The current 6.0-liter W-12 tops out at 616 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque in the Bentley Flying Spur luxury sedan. The current Audi A8 with a 6.3-liter W-12 makes 500 hp and 463 lb-ft of torque.
VW detailed plans for the new W-12 last month at an industry symposium in Vienna. The engine will be fitted in VW's rear-drive MLB platform, starting with next year's Bentley Bentayga crossover vehicle. The new W-12 also will power VW Group's next-generation Audi A8 flagship sedan and Volkswagen Phaeton, as well as replacements for Bentley's Continental and Flying Spur models.
VW says the engine is track-ready and suitable for off-road use. Another potential application is in the Audi Q7 crossover vehicle.
