Volkswagen Group CEO Matthias Mueller says the company plans in January to begin a European recall of diesel-powered cars that were rigged to cheat government emission tests.
He tells the Frankfurter Allgemeine all affected cars in Europe should be fixed by the end of 2016. VW has estimated 8 million Audi, Skoda and VW brand vehicles were equipped with the cheater diesels.
Mueller says he believes the cheating was the work of a small number of employees that doesn't include former CEO Martin Winterkorn.
He adds that the crisis, which has erased one-third of VW's market value, offers an "opportunity" to create a slimmer, more decentralized and cost-efficient company. Mueller also indicates the restructuring, which will include an evaluation of each model in the company's portfolio, will proceed at an evolutionary rather the revolutionary pace.
