Volkswagen AG has offered free software updates for about 4 million of its diesel-powered cars in Germany to lower their emissions of nitrogen oxides.
CEO Matthias Mueller reported the plan yesterday at a meeting with government officials to discuss strategies to avoid diesel bans in major cities, Reuters reports. The government plans a follow-up Diesel Summit with German carmakers on Aug. 2.
VW’s proposed recall is the latest by German diesel makers as part of a new initiative kicked off last week by VW’s Audi unit to defend the future of the diesel. The plan aims to offset the damage done by VW’s admission in 2015 that it illegally rigged 11 million diesels, including 8.5 million in Europe, to cheat on emission tests.
