Volkswagen AG’s Electrify America unit says it has hired three contractors to install some 2,800 Level 2 charging stations at 500 locations across the U.S. over the next 18 months.
The carmaker formed the subsidiary earlier this year to manage the $2 billion it has agreed to spend on EV charging stations and zero-emission awareness programs. The program is part of VW’s $15.3 billion diesel emissions settlement.
The recharging network will be installed by EV Connect, Greenlots and SemaConnect in 18 major metropolitan areas. The companies will work with VW to identify sites, install equipment and operate and maintain the charging stations.
About three-fourths of the stations will be located at workplaces, and the rest will be at apartment buildings and other multi-family housing developments. More than one-third are expected to be located in California. Another 200 quick-charge stations will be added later.
