Volkswagen AG says it may delay the introduction of its first diesel-powered car in Japan pending the outcome of the company's growing scandal over rigged diesel emission tests in the U.S.

VW had planned to debut a diesel option in Japan for its Passat midsize sedan during the first quarter of 2016. The standard gasoline-powered Passat, which was updated two months ago, is not affected by the delay.

The company admitted earlier this week it has shipped 11 million vehicles worldwide with 4-cylinder diesels rigged to revert to a "dirtier" operating mode after undergoing government certification tests. VW will take a $7.2 billion charge in the current quarter for fines and unspecified consumer resolutions to the problem.
