Volkswagen AG has set up team with South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd. to monitor the security of the supply chain for batteries needed for the carmaker’s electric vehicles.
Thomas Ulbrich, who heads electric mobility activities for the VW brand, tells reporters that the task force, which meets every two weeks, hopes to avoid supply disruptions caused by problems among third- and fourth-tier technology providers.
Ulbrich says the monitoring is necessary because LG Chem and its suppliers are not accustomed to the rigors of automotive supply procedures and performance demands. He notes that any glitch in battery production would halt EV output within days.
The VW brand has said it will introduce 18 all-electric models over the net four years. The unit expects to be assembling at least 300,000 EVs per year by then.
