It will take months, not weeks, to settle on a solution with U.S. regulators for the company’s diesel emission cheating in the U.S., brand leader Herbert Diess tells the Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung.
VW has been negotiating for months with the Environmental Protection Agency, Dept. of Justice and California Air Resources Board about repairing and paying penalties for 580,000 diesels the company rigged to evade emission rules.
Any settlement must address multiple engine designs, differing technical issues and both 4- and 6-cylinder powerplants. VW has said the repairs will vary by engine and, in some cases, may be best resolved if the company buys back vehicles from owners.
