Volvo's 3-cylinder engine
Volvo Car Group has begun prototype testing of a 3-cylinder gasoline engine it has developed in-house.
The company offers few details about the new turbocharged powerplant, which will borrow design features from the 4-cylinder "Drive-E" engine Volvo launched in 2013.
The 3-banger will target Volvo's new CMA (compact modular architecture) small-car platform. But the company says the little engine could power vehicles as large as the company's 60 series midsize sedans.
Volvo describes the lightweight 3-cylinder engine as being developed for "several different applications," suggesting a role in upcoming hybrid systems. The powerplant can be built on the same production line that makes the company's 4-cylinder engine.
