Volvo Car Corp. is the latest company to partner with Baidu Inc. in developing and deploying self-driving vehicles for the Chinese market.

Volvo’s aim is to design and build mini-shuttles specifically to function as robo-taxis, although it hasn’t yet signed a commercial deal to do so, Bloomberg News reports.

Baidu, China’s largest internet search engine, unveiled its third-generation of its Apollo software platform for robotic cars in July. Volvo says it aims to combine the open-source software with its vehicles to launch a fleet of Level 4 self-driving taxis about five years from now. Such vehicles will be able to operate with no human intervention inside specified areas.

This year Baidu has signed or expanded autonomous-driving Apollo-based alliances with BlackBerry, Ford, Daimler, SoftBank and Valeo.
