Volvo Car Corp. says at least 25% of the plastic it uses in new cars by 2025 will be made from recycled material.
About 5% of the plastic used in Volvo’s cars today is derived from recycled materials, according to the company. The applications will be in such areas are carpet, sound deadening panels and interior trim.
The carmaker is urging its suppliers to help with the program by ensuring that enough recycled plastic will be available to produce the components.
Volvo had said it expects to have “climate-neutral” manufacturing operations by 2025, beginning last January with its engine plant in Skovde, Sweden. The company also said it has committed to eliminating single-use plastics at all its facilities and events by the end of 2019.
