Via Transport Expands Micro-Transit Service
New York City-based Via Transportation Inc. is expanding its four-year-old ride-sharing service to Arlington, Tex., and West Sacramento, Calif.

New York City-based Via Transportation Inc. is expanding its four-year-old ride-sharing service to Arlington, Tex., and West Sacramento, Calif.
The so-called micro-transit system uses flexible routing to facilitate ride-sharing among passengers headed in the same direction. Users reserve and pay for rides with a smartphone app, which features an advanced software algorithm to coordinate routes and schedules.
Service in Arlington is due to begin in early December. Via will replace the city's single-route bus service and extend public transportation availability to previously under-served communities.
In West Sacramento, Via is working with the local leaders to design a city-wide service that will complement other public transportation options. Service is expected to start next spring.
Via currently operates Mercedes vans in New York City, Chicago and Washington, D.C., providing more than 1 million rides per month. In September Via announced a joint venture with Mercedes to expand the service to Europe, starting in London later this year.
