Germany's VDA automotive industry group says information technology has become essential in new cars.
VDA President Matthias Wissmann declares that partnerships between automotive and IT companies are becoming essential as in-car electronics components and systems grow. He points out that the proportion of a car's value represented by electric and electronic components has surged from 16% in 1990 to as much as 40% today.
One benefit of connected cars will be less road congestion for everyone, he adds.
Wissmann disagrees with reports that the Internet and social media signal the end for car ownership interest for young people. He points to studies that show more than 80% of young Germans are still interested in owning a car.
Similar research in the U.S. suggests that young consumers are less eager to obtain a driver's license but still strongly aspire to own a car when they earn enough to afford one.
