About 36,800 people died in vehicle crashes in the U.S. last year, down 1% from 2017 and nearly 3% from 2016, according to an early estimate by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

But last year also was the third-deadliest since 2000, and pedestrian fatalities climbed to a 28-year high. Fatalities were at a decades-low 32,700 in 2014, agency statistics show.

In terms of fatalities per 100 million miles driven, last year’s rate in the U.S. fell to 1.14 from 1.16 in 2017. The 2018 rate also was the fourth-highest over the past 10 years.

NHTSA will release more detailed figures about 2018 fatalities later this year.
