A disappointingly low 156,000 jobs were added to the U.S. economy in August, the U.S. Dept. of Labor reports. Analysts had expected the number to be 20,000-30,000 greater.
The department also downwardly adjusted its new-jobs numbers for June and July to 210,000 (-21,000 positions) and 189,000 (-20,000), respectively. DOL says the unemployment rate (4.4%) and number of unemployed (7.1 million) haven’t changed significantly in five months.
New-job growth last month was driven by construction (+28,000 positions), professional and technical services (+22,000), healthcare (+20,000) and the auto industry (+14,000).
