The U.K.’s Dept. of Transport says it will test a diesel-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV for possible regulatory violations after the U.S. said the vehicles use a previously undisclosed device that raised emissions.
Last week the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency asserted that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s Jeep unit violated America’s Clean Air Act by not reporting the device to regulators. The charge concerns 2014-2016 model Grand Cherokees equipped with 3.0-liter V-6 diesels.
EPA says it also aims to determine whether FCA was deliberately trying to evade emission tests. CEO Sergio Marchionne has angrily dismissed the claim as “nonsense.” Reuters reports fewer than 4,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees are registered in the U.K.
