UPS Using Geo-Fenced Hybrid Trucks in U.K.
United Parcel Services Inc. has launched a fleet of extended-range hybrid delivery trucks in the U.K. that automatically switch to all-electric mode when operating in cities and other clean air zones.

United Parcel Services Inc. has launched a fleet of extended-range hybrid delivery trucks in the U.K. that automatically switch to all-electric mode when operating in cities and other clean air zones.
Developed by U.K.-based Tevva Motors Ltd., the hybrid trucks team a 150-kW electric motor and 74-kWh lithium-ion battery with a small diesel engine. The latter acts as a generator to extend driving range to 400 km (250 miles) when the truck is on the highway. By comparison, a similarly sized all-electric truck has a range of 100 km (62 miles).
UPS began the testing with 15 hybrid trucks operating in Birmingham and Southampton. The program is partially funded by the U.K.’s Office for Low Emissions Vehicles and Innovate U.K.
Last year, UPS began testing pure EV trucks in California with Thor Trucks Inc. The company also has ordered 125 of Tesla Inc.’s upcoming all-electric semi-trucks.
