Some 3,900 General Motors Co. workers in Canada will vote this Sunday on a new contract that ensures the future of GM’s assembly plant in Oshawa, Ontario, increas employment and raise wages.
GM says the tentative deal will enable “significant” new product, technology and process investments in Oshawa as well as the company’s powertrain plant in St. Catharines and its parts distribution operation in Woodstock. The company would spend $520 million on the facilities, according to The Detroit News.
Unifor says the agreement will add work at St. Catherines by increasing V-6 production and transferring production of an unspecified engine from Mexico to the Canadian facility. The pact also promises a signing bonus, lump-sum payments and higher wages for all workers, including a greater starting wage for new employees.
The contract sets similar expectations for Unifor contract negotiations at Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The union has been especially keen to win new investment commitments by the U.S.-based carmakers.
