The British government is days away from presenting court-ordered plan to reduce vehicle emissions by retrofitting buses, smoothing traffic flow, cracking down on pollution cheaters and, by 2040, banning gasoline and diesel engines entirely.
The plan follows a similar policy announced by France two weeks ago. The British plan is expected to include a £255 million ($332 million) fund to help lower diesel pollution. The government presented the strategy in draft form in May.
Reports say the program, which is due by the end of July, will focus on quick fixes in response to demands that the government reduce pollution—especially nitrogen oxides—as quickly as possible. Measures will include traffic flow adjustments and other relatively easy steps to lower NOx reading along specific roads.
But England’s high court also has demanded a comprehensive plan to meet promised EU emission limits after concluding that previous schemes were insufficient.
