The U.K.’s transport agency says media reports claiming the government plans to ban the sale of certain hybrid cars by 2040 is “categorically untrue.”
The reports unable to drive at least 50 miles on electrical power alone will be included in a previously announced ban on gasoline and diesel engines to take effect in 2040. No conventional hybrids and few if any of today’s plug-in hybrids would qualify as “environmentally friendly” to escape the ban.
Carmakers, speaking through the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, say the government’s “unrealistic targets and misleading messages” are hurting sales and damaging the British auto industry.
The government promises to clarify its position under its Road to Zero strategy to be presented at any moment.
