Uber Inc. has been approved by the state of Pennsylvania to resume on-road testing of its autonomous-driving technology after a nine-month suspension.
Uber suspended all testing in March after a self-driving Uber test car struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Ariz. Reuters says the company is expected to resume evaluations in Pennsylvania with a few cars on a one-mile loop between two Uber offices in Pittsburgh.
The vehicles will carry two Uber technicians in the front seat, operate with automatic braking activated at all times, maintain speeds no greater than 25 mph and avoid testing at night or in inclement weather. None of the test vehicles will carry civilian passengers, according to Uber.
