The United Auto Workers union has requested a vote about representing workers at Nissan Motor Co.’s assembly plant in Canton, Miss.
The UAW has been trying for 14 years to organize the factory’s 6,400 hourly workers but so far hasn’t been able to hold a vote on the question, Automotive News points out. The union has been defeated in two ballots at Nissan’s larger plant in Smyrna, Tenn.
On Monday the union asked the National Labor Relations Board to force a ballot at the Canton facility. AN says the vote could take place by the end of July.
Earlier this year the NLRB accused Nissan of harassing pro-union workers, interfering with the right of workers to solicit union support and suggesting the plant would be forced to close if its workforce was represented by the UAW.
AN cites U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data indicating that only 7% of workers in Mississippi belong to a labor union compared with 11% of employees nationwide.
