President Donald Trump says he might extend the March 1 deadline for a trade deal between the U.S. and China if the two sides appear to be close to a “real deal.”
Last July the U.S. said it would impose 25% tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese imports. Days later the White House announced it was expanding the sanctions with a 10% tax on another $250 billion of Chinese products.
Trump also vowed to hike tariffs to 25% on $200 billion of the latter group of goods unless China address what he characterizes as blatantly unfair trade practices.
In addition, he has raised the specter to expanding U.S. tariffs to cover an additional $267 billion worth of Chinese imports. Doing so would apply import taxes on virtually anything shipped to the U.S. from China.
