Toyota Motor Corp. says it will invest C$1.4 billion ($1.1 billion) to prepare two assembly plants in Canada to make the next-generation RAV4 small crossover vehicle.
The project will update Toyota’s existing RAV4 factory in Woodstock, Ont., and retool one of the company’s twin assembly plants in nearby Cambridge, Ont., to build the new model. The three facilities produce more than 500,000 vehicles annually.
The Ontario and Canada governments are contributing a combined C$110 million ($86 million) to the projects. The updates, which will create 450 jobs, will enable production of a hybrid iteration of the RAV4 and include expanded product development work in Ontario.
Toyota plans to launch the redesigned RAV4 in 2019.
