Toyota Motor Corp. is preparing to recall 342,500 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab pickups to repair a seatbelt assembly that can loosen and detach when the rear door in which it is mounted is repeatedly slammed shut.
The recall covers Tacomas built between September 2004 and September 2011. Toyota built the 2005-2010 model trucks at its plant in Fremont, Calif.; the 2011 models were produced at the company's factory in San Antonio, Tex.
Toyota tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that high temperatures could cause "thermal creep" of zinc die-cast components in the seatbelt assembly. The effect, coupled with slamming the passenger cabin's access door, could eventually loosen screws that affix the pretensioner assembly to the seatbelt retractor.
