Toyota Motor Corp. says its second assembly plant in Malaysia will have annual capacity to make about 50,000 vehicles per year when it opens in Selangor in early 2019.
The 2 billion-ringgit ($488 million) factory will be operated by its UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd venture with local partner United Motor Works Corp. The facility will double Toyota’s production capacity in Malaysia.
Toyota says the 670,000 sq-meter (7.2 million sq-ft) complex will make passenger cars, and the company’s existing Malaysian plant will shift exclusively to commercial vehicles. Last year Toyota sold about 96,000 cars and trucks in Malaysia, representing 14% of the domestic market.
