Toyota Motor Corp. has dropped plans for a diesel option for the new C-HR small crossover vehicle it debuted at the Paris auto show this week and will probably do the same for the engine in other new models.
Executive Vice President Didier Leroy tells Reuters the decision reflects a sharp drop in demand for diesels that was triggered a year ago by Volkswagen AG’s diesel emission cheating scandal.
Renault SA expects diesels to disappear as a powertrain option for most new cars in Europe over the next several years, according to Reuters. Sources tell the news service that official blame slumping consumer demand and the higher cost of engineering diesel engines to meet future emission limits.
