Kenworth Truck Co. plans to outfit 10 more of its T680 Class 8 trucks with Toyota Motor Corp.’s fuel cell electric drivetrain for use in a pilot program at shipping ports in Los Angeles.

The trucks are part of a $82 million program that also includes a hydrogen fueling infrastructure and zero-emissions cargo handling equipment in the ports and Los Angeles basin in 2020. The program is partially funded by the California Air Resources Board.

The Kenworth T680s will transport cargo across the Los Angeles basin and to inland California cities such as Ontario and San Bernardino. The fuel cell trucks will have a driving range of more than 300 miles under normal drayage operating conditions, according to the partners.

The fuel cell stacks are borrowed from Toyota’s Mirai sedan. Developed specifically for the trucks, the dual-rotor electric motor powertrain generates 670 hp and 1,325 lb-ft of torque.

Toyota has been testing prototypes of the fuel cell-powered big rigs in Los Angels for about a year.
