Toyota Motor Corp. is launching a “Connected Technologies" group in North America to better focus its engineering, development and strategy for connected service and hardware systems.
The new group will be based at Toyota’s North American headquarters in Plano, Tex., which opened last month. Zack Hicks (pictured) will head the Connected Technologies team, which is expected to eventually encompass 100 people, while continuing in his current role of chief information officer, Toyota Motor North America.
Connected Technologies will include members from the carmaker’s existing teams working on connected vehicles, information systems, and research and development. Toyota defines connected vehicle technology as a system with one or more internet connections for either driver- or car-centric applications.
Driver systems range from apps and internet-connected radio to cloud-based content. Car-centric content includes remote diagnostics, over-the-air software updates, cyber-security and vehicle relationship management.
