Toyota Motor Corp. has added 20 fuel cell-powered forklifts at its Motomachi Plant located in Toyota City, Japan.

The carmaker launched pilot tests of two fuel cell forklifts at the Motomachi facility in January 2017. By 2020 Toyota aims to have as many as 180 such vehicles in operation at the plant, which produces Toyota’s Mirai fuel cell car. Other Toyota plants are expected to begin using similar lifts in coming years.

Toyota says the forklifts can be fully refueled with hydrogen in about three minutes. The vehicles also can supply electricity back to the facility if needed during an emergency.

The carmaker’s Toyota Industries Corp. affiliate built the forklifts and a hydrogen refueling station for the Motomachi plant. The program is supported by joint initiative led by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
