Toyota Motor Corp. has dropped diesel options for three models offered in Italy, where the engines accounted for only 6% of its 89,100-unit sales in 2017, Automotive News Europe reports.
The company’s move phases out diesels for the Auris small hatchback, RAV4 compact crossover vehicle and Yaris minicar. Instead, Auris and RAV4 vehicles sold in Italy will be available only with hybrid powertrains. The Yaris will offer buyers a choice of hybrid system or gasoline engine.
Toyota says its lineup in Italy will continue to include diesel versions of the carmaker’s Hilux pickup truck and Land Cruiser SUV, at least for now.
But the company tells ANE it will continue to expand the availability of hybrid powertrains throughout Europe and could swap hybrids for diesels elsewhere in Europe. Hybrids and diesels represented about 50% and 15%, respectively, of Toyota’s sales in western Europe last year, according to the company.
