Toyota Motor Corp. says it will suspend vehicle output at all 16 of its assembly plants in Japan through Saturday because of a steel shortage following an explosion at a steel plant last month.
Toyota also halted parts production for today only at its domestic component factories. The company hopes to resume production in Feb 15.
The countrywide shutdown is Toyota’s first since Japan’s earthquake and tsunami in 2011 disrupted manufacturing throughout the country. The halt is likely to reduce output by 70,000-80,000 vehicles, according to The Nikkei.
