Toshiba Corp. is building a lithium-ion battery plant in Japan to meet growing demand for hybrid and all-electric vehicles.
The company will begin construction of the 290,000-sq-ft facility next July. Toshiba aims to launch production at the plant, which will be located within the company’s Yokohama complex, in 2020.
The $140 million facility will be Toshiba’s first new battery plant since the company opened a facility in Kashiwazaki, Japan, in 2010. The Yokohama facility will build Toshiba’s next-generation SCiB battery that was announced last year.
