The Devel’s in the Horsepower: Michigan Tuner Targets 5,000 hp from Supercar Engine
Muskegon, Mich.-based tuner Steve Morris Engines has released a video of its 12.3-liter V-16 engine generating 4,515 hp at 6,900 rpm and 3,519 lb-ft. of torque at 6,600 rpm during a recent dynamometer test.
Muskegon, Mich.-based tuner Steve Morris Engines has released a video of its 12.3-liter V-16 engine generating 4,515 hp at 6,900 rpm and 3,519 lb-ft. of torque at 6,600 rpm during a recent dynamometer test.
The engine, which was unveiled two years ago at the Dubai auto show as part of the Devel Sixteen concept car, is said to be the most powerful gasoline engine ever built for a street-legal production car.
Defining Extreme Vehicles Car Industry LLC, a Dubai-based start-up company, hopes to eventually launch limited sales of the Devel Sixteen supercar, although details remain sketchy. When the Devel Sixteen was unveiled, the Dubai carmaker claimed the vehicle would have a jet-like top speed of about 350 mph and take just 1.8 seconds to reach 62 mph.
Steve Morris, which builds engines for drag racing and other custom applications, says the quad-turbo aluminum V-16 is theoretically capable of producing more than 5,000 hp with additional boost pressure. But the engine maxed out the dyno’s capabilities at 4,500 hp. During the tests, the turbochargers were limited to 36 psi.
