Thailand is likely within the next week to approve a Volkswagen AG plan to open an assembly plant near Bangkok by 2019.
Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung cites the country's BOI investment authority, adding that VW plans to export cars from Thailand.
VW intends to build the factory under Thailand's "Eco2" incentive program. The plan offers tax breaks and customs benefits to companies that pledge to open factories in the country by 2019 and produce fuel-efficient cars at volumes of more than 100,000 units per year.
VW has declined comment. But Reuters notes that CEO Martin Winterkorn has previously emphasized that the company wants to bolster its presence in southeast Asia.
