Tesla Inc.’s SolarCity unit will start taking orders for its solar roof panels in April, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced via Twitter.
Production of the photovoltaic solar panels is due to launch this summer at a 1.2-million-sq.-ft plant in Buffalo, N.Y., that SolarCity will operate through its partnership with Panasonic Corp. The panels are designed for use in conjunction with Tesla’s Powerwall and Powerpack battery backup modules for homes and small businesses.
Tesla hasn’t announced pricing for the solar panels. Musk previously has vowed the “green” technology will be less expensive to manufacture and install than traditional shingles, but analysts are skeptical.
