Tesla Motors Inc. shrugs off a local media report that the huge battery "gigafactory" it is building in Nevada has been hampered by unspecified construction delays.

The Reno Gazette-Journal cites the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers' jobs listing, which says the project had been "cut back by 80% at this time." But Tesla insists everything is on schedule.

The battery factory eventually could cost $5 billion, according to Tesla. CEO Elon Musk has predicted the 10 million-sq-ft factory will be able by 2020 to make enough lithium-ion cells to power 500,000 electric vehicles.

But the facility is being built in steps to match likely demand for its cells and batteries. First-phase construction is backed in part by a $250 million investment from Panasonic Corp. Tesla told reporters in Japan three weeks ago the plant would begin initial operations in 2016, a year earlier than originally planned.
